On Friday December 8th The Hive in Shrewsbury is hosting “A Christmas Carol: A Folk Opera”, a retelling of the classic Christmas Carol story performed by folk opera group, Green Matthews.
Using new lyrics and traditional English folk tunes, Green Matthews (with special guest Jude Rees of Pilgrims’ Way) use a blend of voices and instruments to create a musical retelling of this seasonal favourite. This version of the tale is told purely through music and song, using brand new lyrics set to traditional English folk and carol melodies.
Emma Croall, Programmes & Projects manager at the Hive said: “We’ve gained a reputation at the Hive for putting on fantastic folk gigs by a range of internationally renowned artists and we wanted to end the year with something a little bit special. This retelling of a classic story through folk music gives audiences the opportunity to experience A Christmas Carol like never seen before in a truly unique, one-off performance in Shrewsbury.”
The first half of the show presents a blend of Victorian carols and midwinter folk songs which paint a vivid and colourful picture of the festive season in Dickens’ time. The second half is an hour-long ‘folk opera’ of his most iconic novella – the tale of how Ebenezer Scrooge undergoes several ghostly visitations over the course of a cold and bitter Christmas Eve and awakes the following morning transformed and full of Christmas spirit.
Emma Croall added: “This is the perfect performance for getting you into that festive feeling and a great relaxing evening event for all generations of the family to come together and enjoy a story they all recognise, but with a slight twist. With the Albert Finney film of ‘A Christmas Carol’ being filmed here in the early 80s we’re confident people will enjoy a different delivery of this much-loved tale and the affiliation the town has with it.”
